Talk Nerdy

Talk Nerdy is one of the best and longer running science podcasts out there. Wait! Don’t run off. It isn’t some boring dude droning on about quarks or a super hyper young woman who talks so fast you think you’re having a stroke because you can’t keep up. Read more

Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World

Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World

Want a really good research tool that isn’t Wikipedia. No shame, I love wikipedia, I just used it to write about Alice Bowman. Anyway. If you want to start slow on a topic, go directly to the juvenile nonfiction section of your local library and there you will find adult topics with training wheels. Thin books with lots of pictures and simplified sentences describing complicated ideas. In books written for younger readers the authors aren’t trying to impress their colleagues or their haters. All they are trying to do it convey the essence of the topic. And this brings us to Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World by Rachel Ignotofsky. Read more

The Great Courses Plus

The Great Courses Plus

Alright, nerds. Take this down. You can have access to The Great Courses Plus, which is a streaming service full of lectures about everything you have ever wanted to know about, for 10 bucks a month (30 dollars every three months). “But I am not a nerd,” you might be thinking. Come on. Everyone is a bit nerdy. Well, except for Joan Jett. She is the epitome of cool, at least according to me. If I could be anyone besides myself or Alice Bowman, I would be Joan Jett. Murder Podcasts

I am genuinely afraid of being murdered. Which is pretty dumb since most women are murdered by their intimate partners and I don’t have one of those. Because I am afraid of being murdered I don’t read mysteries, I don’t watch crime shows and I don’t listen to murder podcasts. Why, you might ask? Read more

Poetry

Poetry

Don’t panic, I’m not going to present you with a poem written 200 hundred years ago then say, “Now what do you think the poet meant to convey?” I’m almost willing to bet even the poet had no idea what they truly meant to convey. I also won’t ask you how a poem made you feel. Instead, I will begin with my own embarrassing poetic past. Read more

Spotify

Spotify

When I was a kid, there was always music playing in our house. My dad had one of those hilariously complicated stereo systems from the 70’s and since we moved all the time, he and I were constantly taking it apart and hooking it back up. He even had a reel to reel. It was fun to sprawl out on the floor in front of it and watch the wheels turn as the music played. Which, in a roundabout way, brings me to Spotify. Read more
