Some recipe challenges are easier than others. Making a cake from scratch is good because at the end, there is cake. But the kitchen is a disaster and I have to wash a bunch of dishes and I’ve burned my mouth because I didn’t wait long enough to let the cake cool. Making dinner items is good but dinner is dinner. And then there is getting to make really good Blood Orange Margaritas at 11:30AM on a Tuesday and calling it work.
That is an all around win. I would like to note that someone else picked Six up from school that day and I only drank one. And I only drank one because I took a nap right after drinking it.
I like margaritas made from bottled mix. I like them blended and on the rocks. I prefer them with salt but will drink them without. I am easy when it comes to margaritas.
The recipe I used is based on one I found on the internet then changed based on what I found in my drink cupboard, fridge and the lemon tree in the parking lot behind my apartment building.
So, to begin, I walked down the street to Trader Joe’s and bought their brand of tequila. I bought the light brown colored one rather than the clear one. I have no idea why. I just did. And then, instead of springing for the expensive triple sec we all know and love I found an orange liqueur that only cost 7.99 and had the brand name Patron on it. If memory serves, Patron is a nice tequila. I was hoping that meant the orange liqueur wouldn’t taste like orange tic tacs.
Then I came home where I found a blood orange in the back of the fridge and a rock hard lime that needed to be thrown into the bushes behind the dumpster. So I went and got a lemon off the tree in the parking lot, went back inside and thought, “This margarita is going to be gross.”
But it wasn’t. I put it in a weird glass because I don’t have glasses with bases that look like those cacti fake coyotes howl at.
Now I can’t find the damn recipe I used and I can’t remember what I put in the glass because I only made one and then I went and took a nap. Let me think. Okay. I’m going to go make another one and if it tastes good I’ll put the recipe here.
You will need:
2 oz of tequila
1 oz of Patron orange liqueur
Juice of one half a blood orange
A lemon wedge
A drink shaker
Coarse salt for the rim of the glass
A weird highball glass I found in the back of the cupboard
What to do:
Put the tequila and the orange liqueur and the orange juice and some ice in a cocktail shaker and shake it for 30 seconds. Time it, 30 seconds is longer or shorter than you think. Rub the lemon wedge around the rim of your glass then dip the glass in the salt. Put ice in the glass or use a martini glass and skip the ice. It’s your life, do what you want.
Then pour what is in the shaker into the glass and garnish with either the lemon wedge or use a thin orange round. Float it on top, that might look good?
This makes one drink.
Chips and salsa would go really well with these blood orange margaritas. Don’t bother making a meal to go with it. Make everyone two drinks each, fill up on chips then walk somewhere for ice cream.
