I’ve never read the Nicholas Sparks’ novel, or seen the movie, so I’ll have to apologize now to fans of the book, who think this blog is about an epic romance. On the other hand, it is a love story of a different kind. It’s a love story about women who love lists and office supplies. The Notebooks.
When Aileen and I first decided to start a business, I wanted to do something to commemorate the beginning. “We’ll need to write stuff down!” I said. “We obviously need matching notebooks! Get me to a stationary store, stat!!!”
Had this been 1984, I would have rushed off to my local Hallmark store, where I purchased every single gift my mother received from me as a child. But alas, Hallmark stores are no more. My modern equivalent is Paper Source, and I’m not ashamed to admit, that I love it just as much as Hallmark, maybe even more. The weird Precious Moments figurines have been replaced with fancy water bottles, pouches and scented candles. Yes, please.
I brought my two daughters with me and we proceeded to carefully examine every single notebook in the store. It had to be the right size and weight. It had to have the right line spacing and shade of paper, and most importantly, a spiral spine. Forty-five minutes later, I had the notebooks in hand, along with pouches to store them in and 2 sets of pretty pencils.
When I got home, I wrote Aileen a note about what starting this business meant to me and the hopes and dreams I had about our partnership, then I unleashed my typical bossy (sorry, leadership) behavior and made a list of all of the things I wanted her to do.
We’re several months in and we both still use our notebooks, along with the notes app, variety of legal pads, printer paper, post it notes and the occasional envelope to write down all of our ideas, thoughts, meeting notes and to do lists. But we always use the notebook to record the important things. For Mother’s Day, my middle daughter hid sweet little inspirational messages and drawings throughout the book. It’s now one of my most treasured possessions.
Regardless of what happens with this business, we’ll always have our notebooks, as a reminder of the beginning of our adventure.
